Also known as toxic nodular goiter. This is a syndrome that affects the thyroid gland, and causes symptoms much like those of hyperthyroidism. However, the difference is that there are many small nodules present in the thyroid.

Symptoms include:

  • weight loss
  • increased appetite
  • nervousness
  • restlessness
  • heat intolerance
  • increased sweating
  • fatigue
  • muscle cramps
  • frequent bowel movements
  • menstrual irregularities
This is a chronic disease that affects the elderly, most commonly women over 60. The symptoms can be controlled by beta-blockers, but treatment is only possible with radioactive iodine or antithyroid drugs such as propylthiouracil and methimazole.
