| Physical education, or P.E., has replaced recess in a lot of elementary schools as well. Presumably, this is because parents prefer their kids to receive an "education" for that hour, rather than simply goof off. P.E. is a lot like recess, only part of the time is occupied doing inane tasks like jumping jacks, pushups, and running around the field a few times.
Sure, it's good to show kids how to exercise, but I feel a traditional recess is better for the kids. They can learn how to socialize and come up with their own games, rather than be bossed around like they already are for the rest of the school day. |
