Extremely short history
"Discovered" by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, the Philippines became a colony of Spain until 1898, when the Philippine Revolution ended Spanish rule. It was subsequently colonized by the Americans and then by the Japanese during World War II. Twenty years after the Philippines gained independence from the Americans, the dictator Ferdinand Marcos became president. He was ovethrown by the People Power Revolution in 1986.
