This is a quote from The Real Frank Zappa Book by Frank Zappa and Peter Occhiogrosso.

Originally, Frank Zappa's band was called "The Mothers", not "The Mothers Of Invention". But MGM record executives were sure that the band would get no airplay if they didn't change the name.
In the end, the record never got played on the air anyhow.
