A rant

Now that the MacOS X public beta in is the general public's grubby little hands software developers have invented a new term to help them market their wares.

"Optimised for MacOS X"

Catchy yes? Wow. If I run this app on OSX instead of MacOS 9 it'll run faster, won't crash, and do my laundry.

Wow.

Unfortunately this is total bullshit. This is like saying that a 747 is optimised for flying in Ohio.

What it does mean however is that the developer took the time to re-write his app for MacOS X (carbonising). Not always a trivial task but certainly not an incredibly difficult task in most cases. Optimising it suggests that it has been tweaked for superior performance on OSX. Saying that your app is optimised for OSX is pure marketting bullshit.

I don't mean to sound like a troll here, but I would consider moving an application from an emulator to natively running on the OS "optimized." Classic applications run in the blue box, which is little more than an integrated emulator running a copy of Mac OS 9. Apps running in the blue box don't get memory protection, OS X's preemptive multitasking, or the Aqua interface. Sure, porting an app from classic API to the Carbon API is not hard (or is not supposed to be), but it was meant to be that way, and the benefits far outweigh the trouble it takes. Apple has made the transition to OS X much easier for its developers than other companies have made their transitions by simply taking the legacy API, tweaking it and including it as an API with as many benefits (as far as the OS is concerned) as the "new" new one. Just as I would consider a DOS app ported to Win32 optimized for Windows, I would consider a Carbon or Cocoa app optimized for Mac OS X. No marketing bullshit here.
