Mt. Sinai was first established in 1852 as "the Jews' Hospital in the City of New York," and soon became known for its expertise in the chemistry of disease. With World War II creating new demands on the medical profession, the government began to support hospitals and schools in ways it never had before. Though the hospital continued to bolster its reputation through this time period, it soon became apparent that adding a school of medicine would only help to attract promising young doctors and residents.
The first official proposal to establish a school of medicine was received in 1958. Plans proceeded quickly, and after a charter was drafted in 1963 and the basic structural framework was laid, the school was ready for its first class of students in 1968. After a few years of settling into a basic philosophy of teaching, the school quickly rose to prominence, and has remained highly regarded ever since.
