A Mixed Number is a number and a fraction together:
Two and a half is a mixed number.
Five halves (5/2) is not because it is written as an improper fraction instead.

In Algebra it's generally preferred that you use improper fractions instead because when you see two numbers next to each other it looks like you're supposed to multiply, not add.
