Matthew Pinsent, three time Olympic Champion in rowing, won gold at the Barcelona, Atlanta, and Sydney Games, each time in the stroke position of either the straight pair or straight four. In all three cases he was part of Steven Redgrave's crew.
Almost two meters tall, tipping the scales at 105 kg, he recorded over 8 liters O2 consumption per minute in physiological testing on the ergometer; this is the largest oxygen uptake capacity ever measured, and for comparison, the average man can take in 4 liters in a minute.
In 1996, he and Steve Redgrave were the sole Olympic champions for Great Britain in the Games. |
