As graduate student and later, a member of the
CSRG
at
UC Berkeley
during the development of
BSD
, Kirk McKusick was responsible for the BSD
Fast File System
(including the recent
Soft Updates
addition) and much of the work on BSD
virtual memory
. He oversaw the BSD 4.3 & 4.4 releases for CSRG, and co-wrote both the 4.3 & 4.4 editions of the famous "
daemon book
" -
The Design & Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System
. He has also served many years on the
Usenix
Board of Directors, including two as the president of the association.
