Mac OS Rumors

Mac OS Rumors, or MOSR as it is affectionately called, is one of many rumors sites that report on Steve Jobs' Apple where everything is a secret until it is introduced by Steve himself at Macworld Expo or WWDC or an Apple Event or something like that. The site is run by a guy named Ryan Meader using the name Black Light Media, a name that tries to create the illusion of a large, legitimate company.

Although rumors sites are by definition an eclectic blend of FUD, hysteria, Macintosh evangelism with a pinch of fact every now and then, MOSR tends to be one oft-most mocked for- snicker- poor journalism. At times it tends to be even less accurate (if that is possible) than Jason O'Grady's Powerpage.

Meader's 15 minutes of fame came when not only did he accurately report the Power Mac G4 Cube, he actually found pictures and posted them before it was released (see Apple/MOSR/"Cube" Mac). If you are unfamiliar with the level of secrecy that Apple gives all of its projects, pictures are the holy grail and a very big deal. Apple Legal quickly acted, leading to the joke now that goes something like "you know it's true once Apple Legal sends you a threatening letter."

What people like iriefrank don't see is that Mac OS Rumors has accomplished three things that other sites like AppleInsider and Mac Murmur haven't been able to do:

 1. Remain viable in the absence of leaks. AppleInsider posts a cluster of two or three stories once every month and a half. MOSR has remained interesting to read, just today they posted information about using the Developer Tools CD to boost the speed of Mac OS 10.0. No other site, rumors or otherwise, has posted this yet.

2. Post something real once in a while. MOSR was the first site to post information, and very accurate at that, about the iBook and G4 Cube. At the time, everyone thought the G4 Cube was a total hoax.

3. Know when not to post something too juicy. AppleInsider got slapped with a multimillion-dollar lawsuit for publishing screenshots of Photoshop 6, and they still post screenshots of Adobe products as well as those from rival companies like Macromedia. Duh!
