When people get heavily involved in an activity with no thought for the future or of consequences, it might be because they're so caught up in the moment that they've forgotten there'll be a tomorrow (in which to continue performing that activity, or to reap the whirlwind). A similar situation is to get caught up in doing something like it's going out of fashion, or to spend money like it grows on trees or even like it's water. In a way the idea is sort of related to making hay while the sun shines. While the going's good.
