Lalchand Yamla Jatt

A legendary Punjabi folk singer who wrote some of the finest Bhangra songs. YamlaJatt's was essentially a solo vocal act accompanied by the Tumbi, the single stringed instrument which he played. His sound is unique since he is rarely accompanied by a dhol, without the bass his Tumbi sets both the beat and the melody. YamlaJatt single handedly popularized the Tumbi, before him it was seldom heard on recordings, and generally played only by young children or beggars. Some of YamlaJatt's songs have been remixed by Panjabi MC, one that's worth finding is Das Main Ki Pyar Wichon Khatia.
