It claims to speak for the ruling Worker's Party of Korea and the government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, arguably the most authoritarian regime in the world. It was founded on December 5, 1946 and is based in the capital Pyongyang.
The KCNA collects and disseminates news and information within North Korea, and to the world in different languages, including English, Russian and Spanish. It runs newspapers, radio and, since 1996, its own website. The server is based in arch-rival Japan (www.kcna.co.jp), and while its communiques are still written in an angry but flowery style, it fortunately has ceased publishing entirely in UPPER CASE. |
