The main commercial airport serving both Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas. It was built with an innovative design to attempt to eliminate the long walks necessary for passengers at most airports; gates, ticket counters, and baggage claim areas are intermingled along the outside of each semicircular terminal, so that it's literally only a few steps from the nearest airport door to the plane.
The problem with this setup is that there has to be a security checkpoint for each separate small group of gates, rather than having one for the entire terminal as at most airports.
Some Southwest Airlines itineraries require changing planes here, as I did while flying from Los Angeles to Chicago in March 2000. The men's room, I discovered, was outside the secure area, so I had to go through the metal detector after taking care of business. I can only imagine what a pain in the ass that is with the increased security after the events of September 11, 2001.
