The judas lamb (or sometimes simply the "judas") is a trained animal that calmly leads the the other lambs into the slaughterhouse. This is necessary because without a judas lamb, a herd will mull around aimlessly and resist going into the abattoir (after all, who wouldn't hesitate before going into a building whose main sound is of saws buzzing?) The judas lamb remains safe to be used again.
