Born in Pennsylvania, he attended Harvard and the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Arts in Oxford, England.
From 1955 to 1957 he was a staff writer for The New Yorker to which he contributed stories, poems and book reviews.
His elegantly written fiction usually deals with the tensions and tragedies of contemporary middle-class life, as in the quartet of novels covering the life of Harry Angstrom:
