Also known as the DC-9 and/or TEC-9, the TEC DC-9 is a cheap, low quality, autoloading pistol made by Intratec Firearms of Miami, Florida. It looks very similar to a sub machinegun (with its heat shroud, long magazine located in front of the trigger, and threaded barrel) but is not fully automatic (although it can be modified as such).
The original TEC-9 was banned under the 1994 "assault weapons" ban in the United States, but pre-ban models are still legal to own (except where prohibited by laws in particular states and jurisdictions: such as the California Roberti-Roos law) and a post-ban model, without the heat shroud and threaded barrel, is now in production.
The TEC DC-9 is notable for appearing on the BATF list of "Top 18 Handguns Used by Criminals" and for its use in several high profile shootings, such as that at Columbine high school in Colorado.
