During the civil rights movement black men would march with signs around their neck that read "I am a man" --the idea was to assert the idea that not only should they be allowed to vote without obstruction, but that black people should be treated with the same dignity as any other kind of person... The foundation of the moral philosophy that allowed slavery and segregation requires the idea that black people are not fully people.
