| Nicknamed "The Black Harvard," Howard University is an HBCU founded in 1867.
At the end of the Civil War, members of The First Congregational Society of Washington set out to establish a theological seminary for the education of Black clergymen. The concept grew to include a provision for establishing a university.
According to the HU website, "Within two years, the University consisted of the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Medicine. The new institution was named for General Oliver O. Howard, Civil War hero, who was both a founder of the University and, at the time, Commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau."
