How can people listen to that crap?

It's important to remember that every time the Radio Station plays a song on the current lists, the label which produced that song pays them.

Modern Rock stations (and top 40) are just big advertisements for music. They want you to come out and buy their (admittedly overpriced) CD's and shovel the money at them. This has nothing to do with the actual wishes of the artist in particular, it simply is.
