Senator Kohl was born in Milwaukee. He graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison in
1956 and received a masters degree in business administration from Harvard University in 1958.
Kohl then served in the Army Reserve from 1958 to 1964.
Before entering the Senate, Herb Kohl ran his family business the Kohl's grocery and department
stores. He served as President from 1970 through the sale of the corporation in 1979. Herb Kohl is
also the owner of the Milwaukee Bucks.
Senator Kohl was first elected to the senate in 1988, and has since been re-elected to two more
