Nineteenth century German
physician was the director of the state mental hospital in
Frankfurt from
1851 to
1888. His groundbreaking work in the treatment of the
mentally ill has been eclipsed by the phenomenal
popularity of his
1845 twisted
children's book,
Struwwelpeter. He wrote and illustrated it for his sons because he could not find a
book that wasn't too
didactic,
dreary, or
stupid.
