Guggenheim fellowships are
financial grants
(by the
John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation
) to selected individuals made for a minimum of six months and a maximum of twelve months. The purpose is to allow Fellows to have as much creative freedom as possible. There are no special conditions on how Fellows spend the money. Only
advanced professionals
in
natural sciences
,
social sciences
,
humanities
and
creative arts
are allowed to apply.
Grants are considered yearly in one of its competitions where the work of the
artists
or
scientists
will be reviewed by the Foundation's
network
of
advisors
. After the review, the
Committee of Selection
weighs the
applications
field by field and makes the final decisions.
Approximately, 200 grants are awarded a year. The average amount granted is $35,000.
