A phrase which was originally coined in the show Leave it to Beaver in the 1950s by an annoying character named Beaver Cleaver. The show was about a cheesy cookie-cutter family, and it hid its sexual innuendo much more deeply than in today's shows. Today the phrase is often used in sarcasm, to mock someone who is too much of a "boy scout" or as social commentary, as in a Propagandhi song whose name escapes me:
Tie a yellow ribbon round the oak tree my friend and gee Wally, that's swell — fuck the troops to hell! |
