A visit to Italy from 1521 to 1526 allowed de Miranda to meet such luminaries as Ludovico Ariosto and Pietro Bembo, and to receive copious inspiration - inspiration that he took back with him to Portugal, where he near-singlehandedly renewed Portuguese poetry and literature.
The form and language of the Italian Renaissance poetry affected de Miranda's poetry deeply. He imported characteristic Renaissance genres and poetic forms, such as the dekasyllabic sonnet - a form that he applied with particular talent. However, his most original and important works were kept in the local traditional pentasyllabic meter. |
