American-born Protestant theologian, founder of L'Abri Fellowship, a Christian commune/retreat in Switzerland; his hippie-like appearance fit well with the young seekers of The Jesus Movement. Author of Art and the Bible, The God Who is There, and A Christian Manifesto. Once apolitical, in the 70s he threw in his lot with the US "New Right", on pro-life grounds, adding legitimacy to the politicizing of what would become the "Moral Majority".
