Dinah Washington is one of the greatest jazz/blues singers to ever grace the stage. Her voice, with it's almost coy yet supple sound, and her unique gospel tinged delivery, made her a favorite with audiences around the world.
She began her career singing in church as did many of the great blues singers. Eventually she branched out and began performing in various Chicago nightclubs as well as touring with a gospel group. In 1942, she was discovered by the great Lionel Hapton and toured with his band for three years before beginning her solo career.
From 1949 to 1955 she scored many Top 10 hits on and off the blues charts. Perhaps her greatest recordings are her interpretations of the songs: "If I Were a Bell," "I've Got a Crush on You," and "Somethings Gotta Give." |
