There are many different bets that you can make at the craps table, but the most basic is "Pass"/"Don't Pass", which is essentially betting on whether the shooter (the person with the two dice) will win (Pass) or lose (Don't Pass). At the start of a new craps game, the shooter has a "come out roll". If the "come out roll" is 7 or 11, then the shooter wins immediately and the game is over. If the roll is 2, 3 or 12 then the shooter loses ("craps out"). Otherwise the number on the dice is established as "The Point". The shooter then continues to roll the dice until he or she either rolls "The Point" again (which is a win for the shooter) or a 7 (which is a loss). If the shooter loses, then the dice are passed to the next player counter-clockwise, otherwise the shooter starts a new game.
The "Come"/"Don't Come" bet is similar to the "Pass Bet", except that they are placed after "The Point" has been established. The difference is that instead of betting that "The Point" will come up before a 7, the bet is that whatever was rolled last will come up again before the game is over. Also, a "Come Bet" wins immediately if the next roll is 7 or 11.
Other possible bets include: Field Bets (a bet on what the next roll of the dice will be), Any Seven Bets (a bet that the shooter will throw a 7 next) and Craps Bets (a bet that the shooter will throw a 2, 3 or 12 next).
One of the best bets in Craps is the Odds Bet, since the casino don't have an edge on this bet. This means that it pays fairly according to the odds, which is not the case in many bets in casinos. The odds bet can be made on the pass, don't pass, come and don't come bets, once the point has been established. Craps tables usually have some sign or writing stating the maximum you can bet on odds - 1, 2 or 3 times the original bet is most common. In the long run, you can expect to get even with the casino on the odds bet. The downside is of course that you have to have a bet already to make the odds bet. Sometimes it is possible to buy another player's odds bet, if he cannot afford it or isn't betting it to the full. Nekojin says that is very rare
The best bet, which is the only possible way the have a theoretical edge over the casino, is to buy a Don't Come bet from another player. When you place a "don't come" bet, the next roll will be treated as the "Come Out" roll - you lose on a 7 or an 11. After the first roll, you win on 7 and lose only on the point, which at its worst give you a 6 to 5 advantage. You play with the casino, against the other players. Now, if a player want to remove his Don't Come bet for some reason, try to buy it. It's the best bet there is.
Here are the true odds for the different combinations of the dice in a craps game.
Total Combinations Number of Odds Dice possible Combinations versus a 7 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 (1,1) 1 6 to 1 3 (1,2) (2,1) 2 6 to 2 = 3 to 1 4 (1,3) (3,1) (2,2) 3 6 to 3 = 2 to 1 5 (1,4) (4,1) (3,2) (2,3) 4 6 to 4 = 3 to 2 6 (1,5) (5,1) (4,2) (2,4) (3,3) 5 6 to 5 7 (1,6) (6,1) (2,5) (5,2) (3,4) (4,3) 6 1 to 1 8 (2,6) (6,2) (3,5) (5,3) (4,4) 5 6 to 5 9 (3,6) (6,3) (4,5) (5,4) 4 6 to 4 = 3 to 2 10 (4,6) (6,4) (5,5) 3 6 to 3 = 2 to 1 11 (5,6) (6,5) 2 6 to 2 = 3 to 1 12 (6,6) 1 6 to 1
Finally, a nice drawing of the table for reference.

The difference between Pass and Don't Pass (and Come and Don't Come, by extension) is a razor-thin margin. But it does exist, and attempting to dismiss it as unimportant is foolish. The House Edge on Pass is 1.414%, which is a very small margin. Taking single odds reduces it down to 0.707%; taking more odds shaves it even thinner. However, the base House Edge on Don't Pass is 1.408%, or 0.704% after odds - lower by a fraction of a percent. If you think that fraction doesn't matter, think again. Don't give the House any more of an edge than you have to.
If you prefer to bet the Pass line, don't take this as an attack. Just be aware of the odds - the true odds, not the posted table odds - of every bet you make.
Craps "Optimal Strategy"?
The "optimal strategy" for this game (like all other casino games): DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME! Take whatever chips you have remaining and cash them in at the cashier cage. Craps is not a beatable game using any strategy over the long run (barring cheating).
If perhaps you should find yourself "forced" (by gunpoint or coercion) to play this game then the optimal strategy changes somewhat. To get the lowest house edge you should bet the minimum on the Pass Line and take the maximum free odds allowed. By taking single odds you reduce the house edge from 1.51% to .85%. Ten times odds further reduces it to .18% and 100 times odds reduces the edge to .02% When betting on the Don'ts with 100 times odds you drop to an astonishingly low .014% house edge. By far the lowest house edge you can expect to find at any table game.
Of course, for you to get this low house edge you have to risk more money. If you want the minimal risk to your bankroll (and also the least variance) then you should stick to just betting on the Pass Line, Come, Don't Pass, or Don't Come.
Craps Definitions!
Craps has more words, phrases, and odd sayings than any other casino game. If you want to be the coolest kid on your block or if you want to become a dealer, boxman, or stickman then you should be able to recognize all the terms. Understanding the terms makes watching and playing the game a lot more entertaining.
Let me know if you know of any others that belong in the list.
One variation of craps is 7-11, which is what people usually play when they play craps at home (or in school/alleyways/etc).
The differences between 7-11 and regular casino craps are:
One way to make money at this is to play with your drunk friends, and try to pick up the don't pass bet as much as you can from people who want the pass line (since the bet is even money, but the odds favor don't pass). This is easier than you think. If you're playing this, you're probably drinking. And if everyone's drinking, a lot of people will want to take the pass line.
