Salut Public, Comite de, (French, Committee of Public Safety), the term applied to a number of members of the National Convention during the Reign of Terror, 1793-1794, who acted as the dictators of France. Robespierre, the real chief, though half concealed from view, Couthon, and St. Just, finally came to be the committee. Among these there was perfect equanimity down to the moment of their fall. Robespierre, Couton and St. Just were executed on the 9th Thermidor (July 28, 1794).
