The capital of Slovakia in Central Europe, located originally on the left bank of the Danube river, with much new construction on the right bank in the late twentieth century. Located about 50 kilometers down the Danube from Vienna. Bratislava originally dates to the times of the Roman Empire whose troops built an oppidum in its current location.
During the Turkish occupation of Vienna, Bratislava was the temporary capital of the Austrian Empire.
Bratislava is also known historically by other names: Posonium in Latin, Istropolis (i.e., Danube City) in Greek, Pressburg in German, and Pozsony in Hungarian.
The Latin and Hungarian names come from Prince Bozan, the Slovak and German names from Prince Braslav (the German name is short for Braslavesburg). |
