Vicious: Angels that are forced from heaven have to become demons. Isn't that right, Spike?

Spike: I'm only watching a dream that I never awakened from.

Vicious: I'll wake you up right now.

Spike: Don't be so anxious, Vicious. It's our first time meeting in a while, right?

Vicious: A plea for your life?

Spike: Hardly. That doesn't work on you, remember?

-Spike and Vicious celebrating their reunion

Ballad of Fallen Angels is the 5th episode of the 26 episode television anime series, Cowboy Bebop. This episode was written by Michiko Yokote, and wasn't originally broadcast, WOWOW broadcast this episode in its proper place on 11.20.98.

Cowboy Bebop is a science fiction show that follows a crew of misfit bounty hunters. Spike Spiegel, an ex-assassin for a crime syndicate; Jet Black, an ex-law enforcement agent; Faye Valentine, a thief, gambler, and seductress; Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV, a teenage computer genius; and Einstein, a data dog. At the moment we have only met Spike and Jet, but in this episode they shall meet a new companion.

We start out with an assasination at a crime syndicate. It also seems that two of the people know Spike. Soon afterwards, there's a bounty for Mao Yenrai, a high level mobster. Jet doesn't feel like tackling it, so Spike decides to go. However, Jet can tell there's something more to this one for Spike.

Faye gets some additional information to where the bounty might be. Instead, she finds out what Spike apparently knew all along. The bounty was a trap, set by an old friend of Spike's, Vicious.

For me, this was the real take-off episode for Cowboy Bebop. It introduces the Spike/Vicious story arc that is so important to the series. Also, the fight sequences and the music fit so wonderfully well.
