| A somewhat controversial book written by John Colapinto (2000) about the intersection of biological sex and gender identity. Biological sex relates to your genetic makeup (ie, male or female), while gender identity relates to how you perceive and present your own gender. For those of you familiar with the "nature vs. nurture debate," this book raised many questions about which is more important in the development of gender identity. The basic premise of the book is this...Way back in Canada in 1967, twin boys went into a hospital for a routine circumcision procedure; sadly, only one procedure went smoothly. The other case, Bruce, had his penis severely burned, enough to be essentially useless. His parents consulted a doctor by the name of John Money (a sexologist at Johns Hopkins University), who recommended that Bruce be surgically altered and raised as "Brenda." At the age of 14, "Brenda" was told the story of what happened to her as a child, and she decided to have her sex changed back to male (she then called herself "David"). |
