Antonio de Ulloa is usually considered the discoverer of platinum. During a voyage to Mexico in 1735, he found that the locals were familiar with a very heavy metal, which was impossible to smelt using contemporary furnace technology and therefore useless. Returning to Spain, he wrote a monograph on the new metal, in 1748. |
