Ακις

The god of the river of the same name, near Etna. He was supposed to be the son of the Italic god Faunus and the Nymph Symaethis. Before being a river, he had loved the Nymph Galatea who was also loved by the Cyclops Polyphemus, but with no hope of success. In his intense jealousy, Polyphemus tried to crush his rival under some rocks, but Acis turned himself into a river, and thus escaped from the giant.
