Refers to step 5 in the program of
Alcoholics Anonymous in which one admits to another human being the exact nature of their wrongs. This is an integral part in the actual working of the
12 steps. This follows
step 4(duh), wherein this same person has made a searching and fearless moral
inventory of oneself. One is to search out flaws and/or
character defects in order to get at the
root causes which may have led to the problem with alcohol. In the fifth step, and usually with one's
sponsor, one admits to these faults and gives honest examples of such behavior. This has a cleansing effect and also may act as a
catharsis, which enables one to make progress in the working of the 12 steps.
