New events are skeleton (luge lying on your belly), 2-womens bobsled and sprint event in nordic combination.

German luge legend Georg Hackl fails in his attempt to become the first athlete to win four consecutive gold medals in the same event in a winter olympics. He finished in second place. Ole Einar Björndalen of Norway wins four gold medals in biathlon, and Janica Kostelic of Croatia wins 3 gold and one silver medal in alpine skiing. Short track skater Steven Bradbury of Australia wins the first Winter Olympic gold medal for his country.

Scandals:
• A French ice skating judge admits to having been pressured in how to vote in the pairs competition. Canadian and Russian pairs split the gold.
• Triple gold medalist Johann Mühlegg of Spain and Larissa Lazutina and Olga Danilova of Russia are disqualified for doping.
