In Linux (and whatever else; don't fuck with me!), this directory holds libraries for all user programs. It also contains the modules directory which holds all modules that were built in with the last kernel build. The format of the modules directory is usually expressed as the kernel version (as in "/lib/modules/2.2.20/")
