A promoter sequence which denotes the point of beginning for RNA synthesis in bacterial (also other prokaryotic) DNA. The analogous sequence in eukaryotic DNA is known as the TATA box.

Consists of six nucleotides (usually thymine-adenine-thymine-adenine-adenine-thymine ergo TATAAT, may vary though; the probabilities for each nucleotide to occur in the sequence are respectively 0,77; 0,76; 0,60; 0,61; 0,56; 0,82) which are located ten nucleotides upstream (towards the 5' direction) from the transcription start site.
