Crystal D. Sheffield (person)

Baltimore City Police Department officer Crystal D. Sheffield died on August 22, 2002 from injuries sustained in the line of duty on August 21, 2002 while responding to a call for help from another officer.

At 23:30, Sheffield was responding to assist an officer control a dispute on a street corner. She was heading RLS east on Lafayette Avenue turning on to Carey Street through a red light when her vehicle was struck by an unmarked cruiser en route to the same location.

Sheffield died from her injuries at 11:20 at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Sheffield graduated from Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School in 1984 and joined the force in 1999 at the age of 32.

She is survived by her husband Baltimore City Fire Department lieutenant William A. Sheffield, her brother community relations division officer Frederick Allen, her sister Baltimore City Police Department Central District lieutenant Barbara A. Magness, and her 11 year old son Darian Sheffield.

Hakim Farthing (person)

On August 13, 2002, Maryland Governor Parris Glendening ordered the Maryland State Flag flown at half staff until sunset of interment in honor of Officer Hakim Farthing, United States Park Police. Farthing was killed in the line of duty when struck by DWI driver Jovada P. Welch while assisting at the scene of another accident in the Cheverly area of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway at 3:35 on August 10, 2002. He was 28.

Hobart-Lawrence Police Department (thing)

The Hobart-Lawrence Police Department was formed in 2001 to provide local law enforcement to the towns of Hobart, WI and Lawrence, WI, near Green Bay, WI.

The department was staffed with four officers, one police chief and a single squad car.

On July 22, 2002, Hobart-Lawrence Officers Stephanie Markins and Robert Etter were killed in the line of duty on Highway 54 in Hobart, WI when their squad car was rammed at 65 to 70 miles per hour by a pickup truck while they were parked at a stop sign.

The accident killed both officers and totalled the squad car. There were no skid marks leading to the accident scene. The driver, Tyson Kreuscher, has been charged with murder.

Currently the department is staffed by Chief John Konopacki, Officer Richard Brick and Officer Dan VanLanen. Wisconsin Governor Scott McCallum ordered the state to lend the department a vehicle until theirs can be replaced.

Ann Guinta (person)

DeKalb County, Georgia police officer Ann Guinta was killed in the line of duty on July 20, 2002 when her cruiser crashed into a ravine and struck a tree. Guinta was responding to a report of a fight over $1.75 on a MARTA transit bus.

Guinta was a uniform patrol officer and highly decorated five-year veteran of the DeKalb County central precinct.

Guinta was eastbound with blue lights and siren on North Decatur Road around 11 a.m. when her cruiser went into a wooded ravine as she tried to avoid a truck. She died at the scene. She was responding to assist officers in a physical confrontation involving the MARTA driver and passenger Darrell Watkins. Watkins was arrested when the bus stopped on Memorial Drive and I-285 and charged with disorderly conduct.

She is the first female Dekalb officer to die in the line of duty. She was the first DeKalb County officer to be killed in a traffic accident since 1998, when Officer…

Harborview Medical Center (place)

Harborview Medical Center is a research and teaching hospital in Seattle, Washington. The facility is owned by King County, Washington and managed by the University of Washington. Harborview specializes in trauma care, burns, HIV, AIDS, neurosurgery and neurology, and is divided into a number of specialized centers including the Injury Prevention and Research Center, Center for Sexual Assault and Traumatic Stress, Children's Response Center, Airlift Northwest and Medic One.

The center was founded in 1877 as the county welfare hospital, when the city of Seattle was only 24 years old. In November of 1928, King County approved a $2.75 million bond to move and upgrade the facility. Construction was completed in 1930. The University of Washington took over management in 1967 and expanded the focus of the facility to include teaching and research. Harborview currently has 351 patient beds and employs 3,029 full-time staff members as of 1999.

Steven J. Underwood (person)

Master Patrol Officer Steven J. Underwood of the Des Moines Police Department in Des Moines, Washington was shot and killed in the line of duty on March 7, 2001.

At 1:20 am, Underwood saw four suspicious men walking by the Legend Motel on Pacific Highway South. He contacted his dispatcher for back-up, saying he was stopping the group because he recognized one of them as a person wanted on a felony arrest warrant. A police sergeant arrived to find him with critical gunshot wounds.

Underwood died at Harborview Medical Center at 4:40 a.m.

Underwood was allegedly gunned down by 19-year-old Charles Champion. Champion is currently under arrest and will stand trial for aggravated first-degree murder.

A 6 year veteran of the force, Underwood is the only police officer to die in the line of duty in Des Moines. On July 11, 2001, the city of Des Moines dedicated the Steven J. Underwood Memorial Park in his honor.
