couch surfing (idea)

Having been living this as a lifestyle occasionally for the past year, and observing several other people doing it as well, I was surprised to find that there's not a node describing this.

Couch surfing is a way of life commonly found among the stoner and party kid crowds. Specifically, it's the habit of passing out on someone's couch every night because you are too stoned, drunk, tripped out, spun, or (insert favorite inebriation here) to go home. This is more commonly seen at a party house.

There are no rules for couch surfing, but I've noded some tips below that you may find helpful, and tend to make the experience more pleasant for both the host and the surfer.

Always ask before you crash.
When it comes to sleeping locations, it's every man for himself.
If you must sleep on the floor, expect to get stepped on at least once.

So the British couple are flying down The Five in an 86 Country Squire with about a hundred hastily-labeled quarter-inch tapes, 4 gallons of Jim Beam, a case of Old Crow, and an Exabyte tape robot in the back, and the british driver turns to the inexplicably leather-clad female next to him and says 'Ricochet me'.

She laughs maniacally and throws the bigass knife switch mounted on the ceiling and the first of many tapes is jacked into the tape drive.

Stupid Unix Tricks (idea)

Ok, this is not exactly in the same vein as the above stupid tricks, but it's cool nonethless.

Try this at a shell prompt:

bash$ :(){ :|:&};:

Ok, you say. But what does it do?

Well, lessee...it defines ':' as a function which pipes itself to itself in the background, and then calls itself. Nifty eh? I don't recommend trying this with any shell other than bash, as that's the only one I've tried it on. YMMV. Unpredictable results would not be unexpected.

Do not do this. I only say this because I have already gotten a nasty Chatterbox message saying that it broke someone's server. It should go without saying never to type in random shit you see on websites. Especially as root.

Well, I've never done a daylog before, but today was hellish, so maybe writing about it will help.

It was Monday, so I wasn't especially happy when I woke up. On the way to work, my car stalled on the 76, which, if you happen to be from Oceanside, you know the 76 is kind of an expressway, with traffic lights. Anyway, I'm stalled, and people are whizzing by at fantasic speed, and I'm trying to figure out how the hell to get my car off the road. While in the midst of this pondering, I hear a loud squeal behind me. I brace for an impact which never comes, then hear a sort of crunching noise. If you've ever heard a wreck, you know what I'm talking about. So I look behind me, and this poor girl had slammed on her brakes to keep from hitting me, and succeeded. The girl behind her, however, was not so fortunate. So at this point, I've caused a wreck, although apparently I'm not legally at fault, because the cop doesn't ticket me.
