Since then, I've vagabonded around five countries, learned six more languages, and had eleven different majors, five different minors, and two legal names. I've gone through six laptops, written two books, worked at seven companies and three research labs, married my wife, and made innumerable friends. Ten years later, I'm actually graduating.

Finding myself with a bit of spare time to work with, I decided to work on a bit of E2's code. Here are the results:

New User Creation

July 3^rd - 4^th, 2008

We now use reCAPTCHA for humanity checks on new user accounts and send verification links in the welcome emails. New users will now not be able to post writeups until they verify their email account. We also have finer-grained controls on new user signups at the IP level.

Major changes:

Create a New User (superdoc)
- Added reCAPTCHA stanzas, which required installation of HTML::Tiny and Captcha::reCAPTCHA;
- Expanded input form to include username, real name, password, password verification, email, and CAPTCHA;
- Checks for registration through a blacklisted IP address;
- Places new user on writeup suspension until they verify their email address;

N.B.: Clampe now has his thoughts on the draft ToS posted elsewhere, so I've moved his section to this node to the footer.

In the last newsletter, I outlined a set of features we're working towards implementing here. Now that we've all had time to discuss what we're up to and laugh about the schedule, it's time for another update. I'm posting this update in a writeup to make it easier to organize such in-depth reviews¹ as my last note to the site brought.

What is Everything Two?

According to our frontpage lede, Everything2 is a collection of user-submitted writings about, well, pretty much everything. You can write about what you know, and you can write about what you don't know but can figure out. You can write poetry, prose, paragraphs or tomes:

Node Notes

modified Recent Node Notes (oppressor_superdoc) to allow staff to view only those notes which they have created. Props to gnarl for the idea.

Patch System

created ednsection_patches (htmlcode) to allow embedding of a list of recent patches in Everything Developer (nodelet).
modified Everything Developer (nodelet) to include a dropdown menu of the most recent 7 patches and a link to N-Wing's Patch Manager.

Patches

applied 00100's patch to Scratch Pad Viewer, making the blab box properly escape usernames with spaces.
applied mortice's patch to Permission Denied, fixing some formatting oversights
did not apply ascorbic's patch to Other Users XML Ticker II. It would've altered the XML ticker's behavior to differ from the Other Users nodelet.
applied ascorbic's patch to Time Since XML Ticker, fixing incorrect reporting of the current date
did not apply 00100's patches to cool, Message Inbox, and showmessages allowing a user to reply to Eddie's messages -- they weren't backwards compatible. This will be handled more cleanly in the new message system.

Updated Patch Display Page ( htmlpage ) to show the creation date and time.
Updated edev ( usergroup ) to show patch submission time.
Implemented a patch by da-x - Updated Everything User Search ( superdoc ) to format Creation Time like you'd see in a writeup header.
Implemented patch by mblase - Modified Read This ( nodelet ) to indent more and linebreak less.
Moved mblase's Text Formatter ( patch ) to Patch - Text Formatter (mblase) ( codearchive ). The code had changed since the patch was submitted nearly a year prior.
