Northwest WorldGateway (place)

The Northwest WorldGateway (also known as the Edward H. McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is one of the US hubs for Northwest Airlines, although many other international and domestic Skyteam Alliance airlines such as Continental, Delta, and Lufthansa use the terminal as well. It opened February 25, 2002 and is a particularly busy terminal within the US.

Well, I'm not going to bore you any more with the encyclopedic "facts", as those can be found anywhere. Instead, I'll give you a firsthand perspective of the things you can do here. An enormous terminal, it's filled with a wide variety of sights and people which can make waiting for your flight a bit more palatable. Personal experience talking here - I spent about 4 hours a week in the WorldGateway for a year straight, due to business travel (don't ask).

Jamaica Hell Fire is a line of hot sauce products put out by "Dr. Duphorn, Johnston and Co.", in Tampa, Florida. There are three different varieties of their product, each having a slightly different level of heat and/or flavour:

This said, the Ms. Richman quote above, or any variation thereof, always seemed appropriate to me because the Jamaica Hell Fire branded products are neither Jamaican nor are they particularly fiery... well at least not to me. What they lack in heat, however, they make up for in flavour.

When going out to the local dive for a few pints, it's always good to know one or two novelty bar tricks. Whether you're saddled up to the bar with a few friends, or with new acquaintances, it's never a bad idea, when trying to kill some time, or break the ice, to try and get a few laughs going in order for these things to occur.

The following trick is, quite simply, called "the cum trick", and it often does the job of amusing the masses -- even if there is a kind of "gross-out" factor at the end, as realisation sets in.

Step one: Take a cigarette butt -- your own, or if you dare, someone else's, out of the ashtray.

Step two: Remove the filter from the cigarette butt. This can usually be achieved by rolling the butt around in one's fingers, pinching near one end or the other, until the fibrous filter starts making its way out. Dispose of the filter.

Flesh and Blood (1990) is also the title of a follow-up to hair metal rock band extraordinaire Poison's highly successful Open Up and Say...Ahh! (1988) album. A bit more balanced than most of Poison's prior efforts, blending a touch of blues and southern rock ("Poor Boy Blues") into their standard formula of booze, guitars and neon, the album looks almost as if Poison was attempting to refine their sound as a contrast against the ever-rising tide of one-dimensional hair bands.

Regardless, one can't deny that all the traditional hallmarks of glam rock are still strikingly evident on this album; the rock anthems ("Unskinny Bop", "Ride the Wind") and power ballads ("Something to Believe In", "Life Goes On") are mainstays, as of course are the traditional "G, C, D" chord permutations and blatant whammy bar abuse featured in just about every song from the the genre.

Getting Mother's Body (pub. May, 2003; ISBN 1400060222) is the title of a novel by 2002 Pulitzer Prize winning author Suzan-Lori Parks, a terrific piece of literature in which Parks weaves one family's greed, desparation and general distrust into a vivid patchwork quilt of fiction.

The story finds its setting in Ector County, Texas, during middle twentieth century America. Enter Billy Beede knocked-up and unmarried, she's just one facet of a down-on-its-luck, cynical, and perhaps downright dysfunctional "negro" family, which includes, amongst a cast of others, Billy's one-legged Aunt June, disillusioned minister Uncle Teddy, and Dill, the apparent "bulldagger, dyke, lezzy, what-have-you" one-time lover of her momma Willa Mae, a former blues and lounge singer.

With little time and money to her name, Billy attempts to save up money to get an abortion. Try as she might, however, the time begins to disappear far quicker than…

"Uhhh... what now?"

Well... I was seriously hesitant to complete this writeup. It just isn't a particular "manly" sort of thing upon which to extrapolate. However, I'm secure enough (I guess...) and noting that it is not in the nodegel, and seeing as I'm now all-too familiar with it, as the day my fiancee and I get married creeps ever closer... well, I figured I'd take the potshots that come at my expense with a real shit-eating grin. Who knows, maybe it'll keep some of the rest of you from being so bewildered when you eventually hear it.

The odd phrase listed above is one of many traditions -- perhaps a superstitious one at that -- amongst brides-to-be. Specifically, it is a collection of trinkets that the bride in question wears, or otherwise has on her person, during the wedding. Hey now, don't shoot the messenger -- I didn't say it made much sense.
