magic carpet (thing)

1) The magic carpet is one of the fastest ways for a someone to get down a snowy hill. It consists of a rectangular sheet of durable, low-friction, hard-but-bendable plastic about a millimetre thick and big enough to sit on. It has two handholds cut out of one of the narrow ends. The rider generally sits down on the carpet and holds the front end curled upwards between his or her legs.

They are cheaper (under $10) and easier to carry around (roll up to 5 inch diameter) than an inner tube, and they go about as fast. The rider is much more intimate with the ground beneath them, however, which makes the ride somewhat bumpier, and scarier, and more dangerous. This can also make it more exciting, of course.

I'm not completely sure if they're still in production. I'd be very surprised if they weren't, however, because of how cheap and effective they are. The ones I remember seemed to always be yellow for some reason. I may only be remembering the ones in our household, though.

manbeef (idea)

ManBeef is, by the way, a big hoax (though it fooled me for a good long while). Snopes.com, a website of urban legend information, contacted the USDA about ManBeef. Here's the reply they got:

"It is definitely a hoax and you are right, it is illegal to sell human meat, by absence of legality. In other words, meat and poultry to be sold must be inspected by a federal authority. For example, to sell beef it must have the USDA inspection seal on it. If that seal is not on the meat, it can't be sold. Food that is not under USDA inspection, like alligator, must be inspected by the FDA. It is illegal for any restaurant or store to sell food without federal inspection. Federal compliance officers routinely inspect restaurants and grocery stores to ensure that the food that they sell has the required inspection stamps on them."

Dream Log: October 2, 2001 (idea)

I am about to play a sport like volleyball or basketball (but it is neither) in the gymnasium of the high school I used to attend. My eldest sister is on my team, and we are all taking our positions, which are similar to hockey positions. She plays centre and I play right wing (the position I usually was when I played hockey as a kid). The referee comments on my sister's attire. She has knee pads on and I do not. The referee seems to favour me because I lack knee pads. I blush.

Game on!

We are now in a lake, playing a game similar to water polo close to shore. All the players coast around on the water in man- or wind- or magic-powered things…

Materials required:

An empty milk bag (or other similarly robust water-tight clear plastic bag about the length of your forearm--apparently milk bags don't exist in the United States)
A small- to medium-sized flashlight (the brighter the better)
A good supply of duct tape
A diving mask
A snorkel
A pair of swimming fins
A body of water at night with fish in it (preferably warm and comfortable)

Procedure:

Cut open one end of the milk bag and enclose the flashlight within.
Let as much air as possible out of the bag and seal up the end with duct tape. You need to make it keep out water, which is harder than it looks. Try folding over the tape and plastic repeatedly. If you have one of those plastic bag sealers that joins two plastic surfaces through heat...then that would probably work better.

flipping (thing)

A term referring to the act of taking a pill (or pills) of the drug ecstasy. Probably derived from the image of someone flipping a pill in the air and into their mouth.

"Candy flipping" is taking E with acid. I've never tried this. It sounds scary.

"Hippie flipping" is taking E with psycheledic mushrooms. I've only done ecstasy once, and this is how I did it. It just kind of blended in with the mushrooms, making the experience of the shrooms more feel-good and perhaps more physical. I don't think the change it made was worth the $25 I paid for the pill, though.
