William the Bastard ordered that the Domesday Book should be complied at his Christmas court in 1085. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, 'E' version, 1087, tells us 'He (William I) ruled over England, and by his cunning it was so investigated that there was not one hide of land in England that he did not know who owned it, and what it was worth, and then set it down in his record'. The 'Annalist of Worchester' (early C12th) makes a detailed account of the Domesday Inquisition, telling us that 'there did not remain in the whole kingdom of England a single hide or virgate of land or an ox or a cow or a pig which was not written in that return'. So the Domesday Book and survey would have been well known to people during its creation. Indeed the 'Dialogue of the exchequer' (Dialogus de saccario) (1179) tells us that 'This book is called by the English "Doomsday", that is, by metaphor, the day of judgement.

The Carling Weekend Reading, or The Reading Festival, as it is more commonly known, is an annual music event held in the city of Reading. It is held on the August Bank holiday, which was the 22-24th this year (2003). There were over 80, 000 people there each day this year. I went to the last day and night, and it was the first time I've really been to a proper rock festival of any kind. Boy, have I been missing something.

There were over 100 bands playing over the three day period. Most of the less well know bands hail from Britain, however, the bigger acts were from all over the world (though mainly from America and Britain).
The reason that so many people flock to the festival each year is not just for the music, but for the entire experience of the camping, the people and the atmosphere in general.

You get all sorts of people there, from ancient, white-haired rockers, to teenage non-white-haired rockers. OK, so most of the people there are there because they love rock and…

At 0016 Hours, on the 6th of June 1944, the First Allied troops from the British 6th Airborne arrived in German occupied France. D-Day had begun.

Two years previously, in 1944, plans were being made for the Invasion of France and many old and new allied Regiments were being formed and trained in preparation. One of these Regiments was the 2nd Ox and Bucks Regiment (Second Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Regiment). Volunteers were called for from all aspects of the British Armed forces, and there was no shortage of them, as most allied regiments were stuck in Britain, bored out of their skulls. There was plenty of fighting in places like Africa, Italy and Burma, there were still plenty of Regiments and units stuck in Blighty. The only troops who had seen any action in or near Britain, were the RAF, the Royal Navy and elite Royal Marine Commando units. Any hints of some exciting training and the chance of fighting…

Alvis Scorpion Light Tank

Manufactured by Alvis Limited (UK), The Scorpion Light Tank (or FV101) was first introduced into service with different aspects of the British Armed Forces in 1973. It was needed to replace the out-dated Saladin armoured car. It is made almost entirely of aluminium, which makes it exceptionally light and very quick. It did (and I believe still does) hold the world record for the fastest tank. To give you an idea of how light it is for it's size, it's been said that a Scorpion Tank has less ground pressure than a ballerina.

It's main turret gun is a 76mm, capable of firing High Explosive rounds, Armour Piercing rounds and Smoke Rounds. The turret also had a 7.62mm Machine Gun, operated from the turret, and commonly used to lay down covering fire or attack advancing enemy infantry. Several smoke grenade dischargers are placed around the tank, so that if needed it could quickly be obscured by smoke and make a swift escape if things get too…

These are the reasons how people are seen, and why. I will attempt to explain to you how you can almost completely disappear in the wild. The six reasons all begin with S or M (except one, which begins with C), which is how you remember it, got it? Good. Right then, they are:

Shape

Shine

Shadow

Sound

Movement

Colour

Shape: In the wild, you will notice the complete absence in some man-made shapes, for example- triangles and squares. This is because almost nothing in nature is symmetrical. To a human being, the single most distinguishable object in the world, is another human being. So what you want to do is to break up your shape and blend in with the background. Firstly make sure that you are wearing DPM, or some other type of camouflaged clothing, this already begins to break your shape up and blend you into the background. Now to look like Swamp Thing: put two to three elastic bands at…
