One of the things my dad sent me for my birthday last week was a double-CD of two Dave Mason LPs: It's Like You Never Left from '74 and his self-titled follow-up album, Dave Mason. These were a couple of my father's top-ten albums from that era, back when his life mirrored mine in a lot of ways. (Like me, my mom & dad left Michigan in their mid-twenties and moved to a laidback Cascadian college town-- Corvallis OR, in their case-- to go back to basics and enjoy a hippie lifestyle. Yes, this is basically where I got the idea.)

It got me thinking about what I'd choose as my top albums of this decade, the 2000s.

The Iron Reader Challenge continues... The challenge was to read every node posted this month. My February has sort of evaporated on me, as Februarys notoriously do (or is it "Februaries"?), but I plan to persevere into March. So far, I've read up to the 13th or so.

If I was picking favorites I'd mention rootbeer277's The Maltese Shipping Order, which was also posted on Feb 1 but I had leap-frogged over it and tagged it "read later" due to its hefty length. Were I not doing this silly self-challenge I probably would not have come back to it, which would've been a big loss on my part because it is bloody brilliant. A robot noir detective story is a cute idea-- "cuteness" being a potentially fatal flaw when writing SF, in my opinion-- but rb took the time and the length he needed to build the basic idea into a logical, believable world. The bit about servomotors vs hydraulics is the sort of attention to detail that separates good SF from bad.

THE IRON READER CHALLENGE

I follow a blog called Defective Yeti, written by a Seattle humorist/web-programmer named Matthew Baldwin. A few years ago he joked that there should be a "NaNoReMo"-- a "National Novel Reading Month"-- for people too lazy to do NaNoWriMo.

But then he decided: wait, that's actually a good idea. So he went ahead and did it, reading Moby Dick cover-to-cover in a month and posting snarky insights about it along the way. Now he does it every November. (Not Moby Dick, of course. Oh God no. Nobody's that masochistic. Last year it was Lolita; the year before, Catch-22.)

I mention that because I have a similar idea right now. It all started with THE IRON NODER CHALLENGE (all caps mandatory, bitches). I remember being all psyched-up about it when Dreamvirus first mentioned that thing, but when October rolled around I was so preoccupied with life (and books, and video games…

Hi folks. I'm going to make this short, since otherwise I'm sure to blather on for pages & pages...

I have decided to resign my admin buttons for the time being. Most of you probably didn't realize I had god-level access to begin with, so this isn't exactly a breaking headline.

Katherine asked me to join the e2coders group earlier this year simply because I'm excited by the direction that edev discussions have been headed lately & wanted to help out. Once inside the door, however, my desire to help out immediately ran up against my total fear of editing live code. Since after many fruitless months I still haven't overcome that fear (and since sporadic efforts to build a testbed server still haven't panned out), I've only used my unlimited power to heal and destroy a handful of times all summer.

Bottomline: there's no point in me having the Power Cosmic if I'm…
