Bao Ninh (person)

Bao Ninh is the former Vietnamese soldier who wrote a terribly sad and personal novel about the Vietnam War called The Sorrow of War.

He was born in Hanoi in 1952. During the war he served with the 27th Glorious Youth Brigade. Of the five hundred who went to war with that brigade in 1969, he is one of only ten who survived to see the war end.

A novel by Bao Ninh, depicting the experience of a Vietnamese soldier fighting against the Americans during the Vietnam War. Ninh served in the 27th Glorious Youth Brigade in 1969. The book begins after the war ends, in a ruined country, and tells the story of this soldier, Kien, and how he lived through this terrible war. He spent all of his young adulthood fighting it, and the rest of his veteran years reliving it.

This book is powerful, beautiful, and intensely sad. It was a huge bestseller in Vietnam. There is an English version, translated by Frank Palmos and published by Vintage in 1998. It won the Independent Foreign Fiction Award.

Francisco Franco, famed dictator of Spain, lay on his deathbed after 36 years of rule. One of his daughters, awaiting the inevitable, paced back and forth across the marble floor of his bedroom.

Upon hearing the footsteps, Franco regained consciousness, and weakly called out, "who's there?"

"It is the people of Spain, Father," she told him. "They have come to say goodbye."

"Why?" Franco asked, "where are the going?"

Stash is a term quilters use in reference to their collection of fabric.

Avid quilters are always buying fabric. They have this compulsion to own every shade of every colour and every pattern available. They buy a yard or a fat quarter of any fabric they think they might possibly one day put to use in a quilt.

There is an expression in quilting circles: "She who dies with the most fabric, wins."

Neve Campbell (person)

Originally from Guelph, Ontario, Canada, Campbell joined the National Ballet School of Canada at age nine, and in the early nineties performed as a dancer in the Toronto production of The Phantom of the Opera.

Most of us here in Canada recall Neve Campbell from her role as Daisy on Catwalk, which first aired on YTV in 1992, and continued in reruns for a long time after. I used to watch that show every night, but now for the life of me I can't remember what instrument she played, guitar or keyboards? If you know msg me. Thanks.

For the rest of the world, Campbell is best known for her roles as Julia Salinger in Party of Five, and Sidney in the Wes Craven horror trilogy Scream.
