In May there was the gravel arboretum parking lot to spread donut powdered sugar rock dust onto the grass small flexible razor blade ceilings to ants dirt hidden things.

Wet grass grabbed the dust stuck and sucked it up and I walked from the car ducked under the gate and became slightly sugary gray in the half light.

Skinny boy before behind me queer as fruit and all juicy mine.

Big road right next to us, train tracks next to it, us on the cliff hill with the trees still standing as is donated to science by some benevolent crosswind bird long ago; they watch the trains come to the tracks, each October the state fair circus locomotive chugged into town and they carried that elephant ear greasy screw nicotine smell trapped in their leaf veins year round.

Warehouses grow flowers here protected by corrugated sheeting, rusting metal bars guard the grass each night, it's a precious commodity nowadays you know.

Not too long ago, Chiisuta wrote a brilliant node entitled It's always a good idea to tell people you love them if you do. That may seem like a readily obvious concept, something akin to saying "It's not a good idea to forget to breathe"... (sadly, it often turns out not to be, but that's an issue for another write-up)

Alright then, tell the people you love that you love them. Got that, will do.

But what about the people that you don't love?

I graduated high school on June 1st (I swore never to let on here how old I was, go figure) and over a third of the people who crossed the stage with me were people I had known for at least 7 years. I had been "best friends" with almost every one of them at some point or another. However, with me being who I am and the high school experience being what it is, by about sophomore year I had isolated all the people I knew at school to close-acquaintance status.

One of the more meditative poems in the collection, (if such a thing is really posible to define) To Think of Time has stood out repeatedly as a favorite among readers of Leaves of Grass. This poem explores to the far-edges of man's (rather limited) box of consciousness of mortality. It seems to strike a particular chord among intellectual people lacking a belief in any definable afterlife. ie Atheist people and the like tend to find many of their own concerns well-articulated in this poem. Whatever your beliefs, here is another beautifully written piece from Leaves of Grass.

By Walt Whitman from his Leaves of Grass
Last poem of the Autumn Rivulets section.
To think of time — of all that retrospection,
To think of to-day, and the ages continued henceforward.

This little ditty is track 6 on their One Hot Minute album, clocking in at just 1 minute 46 seconds.

Why you should know this song:

1. (good) Ever burned a mix CD? You'll almost always have some extra time left over but often it's less than two minutes and most songs are more than two minutes. This one isn't. It'll fit right in the pesky little coin pocket of your next Mix CD. Waste no possible moment. Fill them all with music.

2. (better) Play the guitar or bass? Maybe not so much? Not at all even? Do you ever find yourself out with people, and those that are musically learn'd are having a grand old time "jamming"? Do you feel left out by your own lack of jam skills? Well, ANYbody can play this song. Practice till you get good, and the funny genius of the lyrics will…

*breath*

I'm pissed at all the incompetence and ignorance that abounds in this world. (Hear me out, this is not a complete rant.) Us folks in this place here are some thinkin' people - and so I know I am not alone in my feelings, or at the very least in my recognizing the myriad of complexities making up "what's wrong with the world." But so what? First off, I'm an American. I'm not even going to touch that one for today. Today I have a specific target: the SUV. Not a new target of mine or anyone else's, just the symbol that's drawn my disgust of the hour. Give me credit, I Know that there are multitudes of intrinsic flaws in human nature are not easy to "fix." The human-animal being what it is makes "utopia" an unattainable human construct. Looks great in the mind, won't work on paper. Kinda like jet-setting around the universe at the speed of light. Not in this lifetime.

Things like one's "Earth vehicle" of choice however,…
